annyms said: Brilliant, I love this idea of taking film photos, then leaving it up to someone else to do something with them, and see them first! I shoot 35mm film all of the time, just because I love the surprise factor of it! One of the best things is to have to be dis-attached in a way, because you never know if it will even turn out. I just found your tumblr because I saw your film on sale in ebay, and I'll make sure to win the bidding ;) maybe we can make a trade sometime (same theme or not!)...

Hi, thanks for the message. Part of the idea of Exposed & Undeveloped is to recreate the feeling of mystery and suspense that is lost with digital. Inside that canister is a mystery and it is up to the owner to either unlock it or hold on to that feeling.

Are we on #025 already? This week’s canister is titled ‘VOGUE’ and I’m excited to see how it turns out… That’s if the eventual owner decides to process the Exposed & Undeveloped film.

To find it just search ‘Exposed & Undeveloped’ on eBay.

I received a lovely message off Jon in the US a few days ago, winner of canister #014 “The Window.”

He, like so many others do decided to develop the exposed roll of film to see what secrets it contained. He tells me that he was very impressed with the roll and in particular one of the pictures which had a crystal glass in it. So much so he decided to print a large 8x10 version.

Above is a picture of Jon with the print which he kindly sent in.

Currently, canister #021 “Firestarter” is available on eBay.

21 weeks after beginning the Exposed & Undeveloped series, they’re still going strong. The eBay auction ending on Sunday 16th September will be just as mysterious as all previous canisters however, I can let you in on a secret that you might find the artist himself in a few of the frames… That’s if you decide to desecrate the art and develop the roll of film!

Don’t worry, this weeks Exposed & Undeveloped canister, #021 Firestarter, is not the one featured in this video. I’ve just done that for kicks!

If you’ve bought a canister and decided to develop the film or not, I’d love to hear your story or see the results.

This surprised me.

The purchaser of canister #009 with the cryptic title of ‘NP19 4TX’ sent me an email sometime last week with an apology because the photos looked so poor.

Here’s a selection of 6 photographs I’ve taken from the 24 pictures which were trapped inside the canister and eventually delivered back to me. I’ve lightly processed with curves as they always seem a little flat when received straight from a photolab.

With Exposed & Undeveloped what you’re bidding for is the mystery / excitement of holding a set of photos that haven’t been developed yet. Ideally you’d leave the canister as it is and hold on to the fun of the mystery that you can only get with film photography. But if you do decide to develop, I’d love to see the results so I can share them here. Good or Bad.

…and I quite like these!

PS. Canister #014 is now available on eBay and is aptly titled ‘The Window’.

I’m always delighted when one of the successful bidders gets in touch after receiving their canister of photographic mystery and shows me the results from developing - especially when the results are good! Thank you Casey for uploading canister #010 - Vandalism or Art. Above is a selection I chose from the 24 images developed that I’ve modified slightly with a crop and curve enhancements… because I can.

Canister #012 is currently available on eBay. Bidding ends tomorrow.

A collection of 24 very different, but plain front doors.
Philip Curwen from Canada was the proud winner of canister #002 ‘The Front Door’. He let temptation and excitement get the better of him and chose to develop the film and have a look at the mystery contained within. Once developed Philip was able to scan in the negatives using his own home scanner. He uploaded this picture so we could see the results.
Thanks Philip! I’m really glad this brought back a bit of the excitement lost with digital photography.

BREASTS, the Giver of Life.

Several years ago a photographer friend of mine, Sami Kelsh commented on my never-ending fascination with the upper section of the female endowment. In a to and throe conversation of appreciation, Sami told me that she could see why all men loved breasts. They are after all 'the giver of life'. Stunned and confused I took what masculinity I had left and from then on gave all boobs the respect they deserve.

Canister #006 of the Exposed and Undeveloped series features the topic ‘Breasts, Giver of Life’. It’s fair to assume that some nudity may lay trapped in the film. This is my interpretation of a topic I set myself, honouring every woman that has or will have a child in their lives.

"The hour of noon came, and I trotted back to Snappy Snaps to pick up my disc and the contact sheet of images. The man who had served me earlier did not make any comment on the results; he just took my money and handed over the envelope.
As I walked back up the road to my office I couldn’t wait, and sneaked a peek at the contact sheet.
And what did I see? A series of amateur soft-porn shots of a blonde woman wearing only black high heels, occasionally using a chair as a prop.
I shut the envelope in an almost embarrassed fashion, as if passers-by might be able to see what I was looking at (they couldn’t, of course).”
Amy Freeborn is a photographic artist who lives in London and is currently specialising in the mystery of undeveloped rolls of film. I was lucky enough to have her find my Exposed & Undeveloped experiment and purchase canister #003, ‘The Art of Shopping’. I hope to hear more about what is being planned with the roll of film in the future.

Canister #005 - Swedish Junk

Exposed & Undeveloped has now been underway for a month with canisters going to Canada, England & Europe. I’ve not seen any more processed examples since ‘The Colour Yellow’ but I trust they’ve all arrived safely in their new owners hands.

Here’s a list of what’s been sent so far:

  1. The Colour Yellow
  2. The Front Door
  3. The Art of Shopping
  4. The Urban Pyramid

Canister #005 is now available via this link. The topic is inappropriately named as ‘Swedish Junk’.
